Fifth generation Toyota RAV4 to go hybrid

Following the official unveiling at the New York Motor Show in March 2018, Toyota have revealed more details about the fifth generation Toyota RAV4 SUV, Cars & Vans Direct take a closer look at the new car!

New Toyota RAV4

New technology

Alongside the Suzuki Vitara, the Toyota RAV4 very much set the trend in the compact SUV segment, however the class is more competitive than ever before with a whole host of rivals in the form of the Volkswagen Tiguan, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Kodiaq and Mazda CX-5 to name but a few. The new RAV4 gets a host of new technology and fuel-efficient hybrid power to really take the fight to these rivals.

Toyota New Generation Architecture

The new Toyota RAV4 shares the Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform with the Toyota C-HR and Toyota Prius and hence the new Toyota RAV4 will introduce a new 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid system with a freshly developed dual-motor electric drive system. Toyota have boasted improved all-wheel-drive performance from the all-new model in conjunction with improved fuel economy, as a result of the rear wheels of the car being powered by an electric motor alone. Toyota have boasted that the switch to the platform reduces the centre of gravity of the SUV and offers an improved weight distribution.

Lighter and more compact

The system is thought to be lighter and more compact than mechanical four-wheel drive, but has the ability to ‘achieve the same level of torque output’. This will be implemented when pulling off or if slippery conditions are recognised, a new trail setting will also send power to the wheels with grip if conditions get particularly tricky. The front-wheel drive version of the new hybrid powertrain delivers 215ps and claimed emissions of 103g/km. The all-wheel drive option is slightly more powerful at 219ps but with the same CO2 figure.

Taller and wider

The all-new Toyota RAV4 SUV is taller and wider than its predecessor, complete with a stockier redesign which takes inspiration from the FT-AC concept revealed at the Los Angeles Motor Show 2017. Measuring 4,600mm in length, the new model is also slightly longer than the previous model, 30mm has also been added to the wheelbase freeing up additional space for passengers in the cabin of the new car. Front and rear overhangs have been reduce, with the brand boasting a huge leap in ride clearance.

Loaded with features

Despite having four trim levels, all of the models of the new Toyota RAV4 are completely loaded with luxuries, with entry level Icon models boasting all of the following features as standard: LED headlights, electronic parking brake, automatic headlights and wipers, powerfolding mirrors, rear parking sensors, 8-inch Toyota Touch 2 infotainment system linked to a rear view camera and seven-inch driver information display housed in the instrument panel. There’s also 17-inch alloy wheels.

Moving up to Design models give the new RAV4: Keyless entry, electronically closing tailgate, front parking sensors and 18-inch wheels. Adding to the features in Design models are Excel trim level cars, boasting all of the following as standard: projector LED headlights, blind spot monitors, rear cross traffic alert, puddle lights, headlight cleaners, a windscreen wiper with de-icer built in, full leather upholstery, heated steering wheel and heated front seats. Sitting at the top of the RAV4 line-up are Dynamic models, with all of the standard equipment and assistance features boasted by Design models and a new sporty appearance with all of the following: black five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, sports seats, black interior headlining and bi-tone metallic paint.
