BMW 7 Series gets bold grille and new technology in extensive facelift

A new facelifted model of the BMW 7 Series has been revealed, with the new car getting a bold new appearance in conjunction with new hybrid and engine options.

New BMW 7 Series

The luxurious BMW 7 Series has undergone an extensive facelift. As part of the facelift, the 7 Series has received new engines, a new plug-in hybrid option and a host of updated technology, there’s also a huge grille that you certainly cannot miss.

Design

The new front end of the BMW 7 Series takes clear inspiration from the BMW X7 SUV, the grille aims to link the two luxury models with 7 badges and distance the 7 Series from the BMW 5 Series. The revamp has been designed with the Chinese and US markets in mind as the 7 Series is an incredibly popular new car on these shores.

The new chrome kidney grille is much larger and raises the bonnet edge 50mm higher than on its predecessor, there’s also redesigned headlights which are far slimmer on the new model also amplifying the size of the grille. Adaptive LED units are standard across the range, whilst the brand’s laserlight set-up available as an option which was also the case on the previous model.

The front bumper of the new car has a shape which is more streamlined, with new air curtain panels on each edge of the front apron remove turbulence around the wheelarches at the front, new chrome detailing has also been added.

Interior

The layout inside the facelifted model is unaltered, however what does alter are the materials used and some of the technology inside. A 10.25-inch central screen with BMW iDrive 7.0 now gets support from a fully-digital 12.3-inch instrument panel. New wood trim options are also available, whilst models with the M Sport package and the V12 M760Li xDrive model receive sportier touches on the interior.

Engines

The V12 M760Li xDrive car still leads the way in the engine line-up, with a 6.6-litre V12 that can deliver 0-60 mph is 3.8 seconds. BMW have ‘thoroughly reworked’ the 4.4-litre turbo V8 engine in 750i models with power increasing 79ps to 523ps in total!

The plug-in BMW 7 Series now gets the 745e badge and has parted ways with the four-cylinder petrol engine in favour of a turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine. This is paired with a higher-voltage battery and electric motor to produce a more powerful hybrid system with up to 389ps, the brand boasts 34 miles of electric driving range on the regular wheelbase model.

Four-cylinder models have been ditched, however the 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engines badged 730d, 740d and 750d all remain.

BMW Steptronic auto box

All new cars in the range get an updated BMW Steptronic auto box, which gains a new reversing assistant alongside the other host of driver assistance features. The reversing assistant has been developed for use in difficult reversing situations, tracking the exact same line the car took over the previous 50 metres, the driver only controls the brake pedal. There’s also the arrival of remote control parking, however this won’t join the range until July.
