All-new Toyota Supra revealed

Toyota took to the Detroit Motor Show 2019 to reveal the all-new Toyota Supra coupe, Cars & Vans Direct takes a closer look at the eye-catching new car!

New Toyota Supra

After months of speculating and teaser images, Toyota have finally revealed the all-new Toyota Supra at the Detroit Motor Show. Toyota boasts that the GR (Gazoo Racing) Supra has been devised as “a sports car in its purest form with no compromise that would diminish the driving experience.” The new model will join the market in the summer of 2019.

All versions of the new Toyota Supra come with a turbocharged straight-six engine which delivers 335ps, every model is rear-wheel drive and comes with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, there is no manual alternative. The Toyota Supra will be able to achieve 0-60 mph in as little as 4.3 seconds with the brand electronically limiting the top speed to 155mph. Every model of the GR Supra sold in Europe will come with an active differential operated by a dedicated ECU, with the system monitoring everything from steering, throttle and brake inputs to engine speed and yaw rate, so that grip is maximised. The all-new Supra has been developed comprehensively at the Nurburgring, with the brand claiming that this was done so that the “most agile, stable and rewarding handling” could be achieved.

Despite having a shorter wheelbase, the all-new Toyota Supra is longer, lower and wider than a Toyota GT86, measuring in a 4,379mm long, 1,292mm tall and 1,854mm wide, the wider tyres and advantageous stance should make the new car even better to drive. In term of design, the production Supra stays loyal to the GR Supra Racing concept which the brand revealed at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, with body panels toned down and the huge rear wing from the concept removed.

The new Supra has been developed with BMW alongside the BMW Z4 and its easy to see their influence inside the new Supra, with a cockpit designed around race-inspired seating, with high back support, integrated head restraints and extra side bolstering. Whilst the car also takes inspiration from the Toyota 2000GT from the sixties, retaining a long bonnet and double-bubble roof. There’s also various functional creases and vents, calculated to achieve optimum drag and lift characteristics, as well as ideal front/rear weight distribution.

All Supra models will get 19-inch alloy wheels as standard in conjunction with a range of bold colour choices. Toyota have said that buyers will be offered shades of red, yellow and blue, as well as a matt-grey finish for their new Supra. As little as 900 cars will be available in Europe in the Supra’s first full year on sale, however the brand hasn’t made clear how many of these will be allocated to the UK market.

Two specification levels will be available at launch of the all-new Toyota Supra, standard and Pro. As well as the 19-inch alloys, all cars get high-performance brakes, adjustable driving modes and adaptive dampers. Also fitted is a rear-view camera, LED lights, keyless entry and dual-zone air conditioning. Pro models also feature: leather trim, 12-speaker JBL stereo, head-up display and a wireless phone charger.
